Hindu’ identity and Nationalism

Ram Puniyani

Religious identity has come to the bigger prominence in the social-political space during last few decades. The rise of communal and fundamentalist politics has vitiated the popular perceptions about ‘who are we’ and this in turn has deepened the divides in the society. Recently RSS supremo, Sarsanghchalak, Mohan Bhagwat stated (September 2012) that, “When we use the word ‘Hindu’, we refer to everyone in the Indian society—be it Hindus, Muslims or Christians—since it is a word that gives us our identity and nationalism.” Will it be acceptable to all Indians? The statement operates at two levels, one religious and two political-national.

Are we all Indians, Hindus, as being stated by Bhagwat? It is true that the word Hindu itself came into use since around 8th century, when those coming from the West, Iraq, Iran to this side of the continent coined the word Hindu for those living on East of Sindhu. In their language word H is used more often for S, so Sindhu becomes Hindu. This word initially begins as a geographical category. Later various religious traditions, Brahmanism, Nath, Tantra, Siddh, and Bhakti, prevalent in this part of the continent started being called Hindu, and Hinduism became the broad umbrella for these different religious traditions. Today while in some parts of the World word Hindu still has geographical meaning, here in India and broadly at most of the places this word is primarily used as a religious category.

Ambedkar, pained by the ignominies hurled on untouchables by Hindu caste system, expressed his sorrow by stating that, I was born a Hindu; that was not in my hands but I will not die a Hindu. He embraced Buddhism and left the Hindu religion. As communal politics started coming up to oppose the emerging Indian Nationalism, the feudal sections and Kings came together to give a religious colour to their opposition to emerging nationalism. In contrast to Indian national movement, they, feudal-lords-kings, posited Muslim Nationalism or Hindu nationalism. The parent organization which in due course gave rise to religious nationalist organizations, was United India Patriotic Association (UIPA) formed in 1888. In the formation of this organization Nawab of Dhaka and Raja of Kashi were the main people. Later some other middle class educated elements also joined in. This UIPA was the parent organization from which Muslim League and Hindu Mahasabha emerged.

While Islam, being a Prophet based religion, did not require any redefinition, Hinduism being an umbrella of various religious tendencies required to be defined for providing a base to Hindu religious nationalism. That’s how Savarkar came up with the definition that all those whose Punyabhu (Holy Land) and Pitrabhu (father land) is in this part of the World are Hindus. This was a political definition of Hinduism, as Savarkar was championing Hindu nationalism and wanted to exclude Muslims and Christians from being a part of nationalism envisaged by him. This definition of Savarkar also included Jains, Buddhists and Sikhs into Hindu fold, calling them as mere sects of Hinduism, which is not unacceptable to the followers of those religions. As these religions are also full-fledged religions.

Now to say, as Bhagwat is doing, that all Buddhists, Jains, Indian Muslims and Indian Christians have a Hindu identity is far from true. It is in a way a political imposition of Hindu identity and thereby Hindu rituals etc. on religious minorities. In the similar vein, nearly two decades ago Murli Manohar Joshi, another RSS Pracharak, then BJP President, stated that we are all Hindus, Muslims are Ahmadiya Hindus, and Christians are Christi Hindus and so on and so forth.

During freedom movement, two concepts of nationalism developed. One was the Indian nationalism, which was the hallmark of the founders of Indian National Congress. This was the defining principle of World’s largest ever mass movement, India’s freedom movement. Here nationalism is geographical and religion is personal. Majority of Indians supported this concept and joined the movement, which not only aimed to throw away the yoke of British colonialism but also laid the foundations of caste and gender transformation, and gave the defining principles of Liberty Equality and Fraternity, which came to be enshrined in our Constitution. The other Nationalism was religious nationalism, which began from the landed élites primarily and was later to divide in two parallel nationalisms, which had similar principles. These were Muslim Nationalism (Muslim League) and Hindu Nationalism (Hindu Mahasabha and RSS). These nationalisms not only kept aloof from the freedom movement, were opposed to the mass movement for freedom struggle but they also subtly protected the caste and gender hierarchy of feudal times in the name of ‘our glorious traditions’ or ‘our religion’ and so on. These religious national streams took back their nationalisms to ancient times. Muslim League claimed that ‘We Muslims are a Muslim Nation since the time Mohammad bin Kasim, established his kingdom in Sindh’. While Hindu nationalists claimed that we are a ‘Hindu nation since times immemorial’.

In this understanding; projection of Nationalism to the earlier times is totally flawed. The very concept of Nationalism begins from last three centuries or so, while putting an end to Kingdoms due to changes in industries and education. Even before kingdoms, there were other patterns of society, which can by no stretch of imagination be called as Nations. These concepts of nations glorify the kings belonging to their religions, while they also demonize or look down upon kings of ‘other’ religions, forgetting that the very system of kingdoms is highly exploitative and hierarchical.

At the same time during freedom movement, the ‘religious nation’ concepts gave a status to other religious minorities as the status of second class citizens. This has what has happened in Pakistan with the logic of Muslim nationalism unfolding there and this is what is happening to Indian minorities with the ascendance of Hindutva nationalism. Hindutva word is again not synonymous with Hindu religion, it is parallel to ‘political Islam’, Hindutva is ‘political Hinduism’ so to say. Golwalkar the major ideologue of RSS-Hindutva had formulated in his book ‘We or Our Nationhood defined’ that the Muslims and Christians must subordinate themselves to Hindus, else they will not deserve any citizenship rights. In India unfortunately his prophesy is getting actualized by and by, with the rise of communal violence and its aftermath.

To say that we are all Hindus is a political assertion to subjugate religious minorities on one hand and to uphold caste and gender hierarchy on the other. The later part related to hierarchical inequalities is the unspoken part of religious nationalism, political ideologies based on religion. To identify Hindu with our nationalism-identity is to oppose the very concept of Indian Nationalism, values of freedom movement and values of Indian Constitution. Such political agenda of RSS as articulated by Bhagwat is to stifle the democratic space offered to us by our Constitution to all of us, including religious minorities, and is an attempt to bring back the Golwalkar’s articulation in a more shrewd way. It will also be the beginning of telling the minorities that they will have to follow Hindu rituals, and Hindu holy books, Hindu deities amongst others. So, saying that we regard all as Hindus, is not an expression of magnanimity but is a way to impose Hindu identity on religious minorities. In sum a substance, Hindu is not the identity of all Indians, its religious identity only of Hindus. And of course ‘Hindu’ is not nationalism in any sense of the word as our nationalism is Indian.

Karnataka: Hindu nationalists raid Christian after-school for children

Mumbai (AsiaNews) - The Child Development Centre Sampigehally (Karnataka), a Christian after-school home to 300 children, is likely to close its doors on false charges of forced conversion and proselytism. The attack is the work of dozen of the Hindu nationalists from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), who on September 29 last raided the center, while having no mandate. Compounding the situation, the intervention of the local police, who gave Brother Reuben, the director, 24 hours to submit proof of ownership on pain of criminal charges. The Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC) has been providing legal help to the center, but at the moment it is not clear in which direction the story will evolve.

For over 15 years, the Child Development Centre has welcomed children of the village - irrespective of caste or creed - every afternoon, from 16:30 to 18:00 (local time). Free of charge, after-school care provides the children with a small meal and help with homework, before they return home. In this way, the children are followed for the entire day.

"In fact - Sajan George tells AsiaNews - this is the second anti-Christian incident in Karnataka in the last month." On 26 September, a complaint from Hindu nationalist Bajrang Dal, four policemen Hunsur interrupted a prayer service at the Pentecostal Church Parishudda Prarthana Mandir, in the village of Kattemalavadi (district of Mysore). The officers questioned the Rev. Venkatesh, demanding the Church building permits, and a special permit to conduct the meeting.

Meanwhile, about 15 Hindu activists arrived on the spot, insulting and beating the Pastor in front of the faithful. "During the violence - said Sajan George - the most shameful thing possible happened: the police stood quietly by watching." At the end of the attack, the nationalists collected and carried away all the Bibles and Christian materials on the spot. At that point, the officers dragged Rev. Venkatesh and the community to the police station for further questioning.

Won’t believe BJP secular till it acts against Modi for riots’

Taking a swipe at the BJP, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said no one will believe the party is committed to secularism unless it takes action against Narendra Modi for the 2002 anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat.
The comments came a day after senior leader L K Advani told the BJP National Council Meeting that there was a need to strive for an imaginative re-projection of the party’s commitment to secularism.
“Advani talks of projecting NDA as a symbol of secularism in 2014. Can any secular person trust them till Modi rules the roost in BJP ?” Singh tweeted Saturday.
Later, he told reporters: “Are L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti ready to accept, in court, their crime in the demolition of Babri Masjid? If they agree, then it will be accepted that there is some substance in their talk of communal harmony. Secondly as long as no action is taken by the BJP against Gujarat CM Narendra Modi, who openly participated in riots in the state in 2002 against innocent Muslims, nobody will trust their talk of communal harmony.”

Narendra Modi comes under attack for comment on women

File photo of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi - Agencies

Dubbing Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's comment on women as 'childish', Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni on Thursday said he is not 'sensitive' towards women.
"The Gujarat Chief Minister, who claims himself to be one of the best administrators in the world, is giving this kind of childish statement specially against women," Soni told reporters outside Parliament.
Explaining why malnutrition level in the state was persistently high, Modi had said in an interview to Wall Street Journal that "Gujarat is a middle class state. The middle class is more beauty conscious than health conscious - that is a challenge. If a mother tells her daughter to have milk they have a fight. She will tell her mother 'I wont drink milk, I will get fat."
Taking on Modi for the comment, Soni said, "There are serious charges against his ministers in his state. He is keeping himself busy in these kind of light matters."
"He is not even sensitive towards women who support their families by sacrificing their food for the sake of their families in Gujarat and now he is saying that women are not eating because they are health conscious. What can be more light statement than this?" she asked and added "I think he is not fit to contest again in Gujarat."
Slamming the statement, Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath said Modi 'lacks wisdom'.
"This is very wrong to say so. Every girl has a right to be health conscious. If anyone thinks it otherwise he lacks wisdom," Tirath said.
Congress MP Girija Vyas was more upfront in her attack on Modi. Demanding withdrawal of the statement by him, Vyas said "We have serious objection to the statement of Modi and he should withdraw it. It is his duty to eliminate malnutrition in his state."
"Modi is not only hiding the cases of malnutrition but also making mockery of girls. Girls are of course figure conscious what's wrong with it. Today girls are going ahead, it does not mean because of health consciousness they are malnourished," she said.
Reacting to Modi's statement, NCP leader Tariq Anwar said, "I think he (Modi) has given this kind of statement to hide his government's failures in the health sector. It does not behove of a CM to speak like this."
RJD leader Lalu Prasad said Modi should have resigned and apologised to people because his ministers were found guilty in 2002 riot case.
"The main culprit is Modi in Gujarat. These are fascist forces who always keep talking like this. In BJP-ruled Bihar also atrocities against women are rising," he alleged.
Coming to the defence of Modi, BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said, "The whole medical fraternity is discussing the presence of anaemia in not so poor sections of society.''
''They are discussing various reasons but Congress has a phobia of Modi. That is why whenever it hears the name of Modi it criticises. I can only pity the Congress because wherever they go they are afraid of Modi that is why they criticise him even on non-political subject."

Poor sanitation kills 1,600 children daily in India: Report

: More than 1,600 children under the age of five die daily in India due to diarrhoea caused by lack of sanitation, a report revealed on Friday.
'Squatting Rights', a research by philanthropic foundation Dasra, said that every year 30 per cent of marginalised women who travel long distances to access public facilities were physically and sexually assaulted.
"In Delhi slums, upto 70 per cent of girls experience humiliation every day in terms of verbal harassment and half of them have been victims of grave physical assaults," said the report.
"Lack of sanitation is detrimental not only to women's health and their dignity but also to their education, with one in four girls dropping out of schools as there are no facilities that they can safely access," the report added.
With around seven million people migrating to urban India every year, owing to the lack of proper sanitation, over 50 million men, women and children are forced to defecate in the open.
The poor bear the worst consequences of inadequate sanitation in the form of ailing children, uneducated girls and unproductive people, in turn costing India 6.4 per cent of its GDP, said the report.
The slums also face an acute shortage of water. While most localities in Indian cities receive three
to five hours of water each day, certain communities receive as little as 30 minutes of water per week.

GODHRA :THE DIABOLIC LIE

Godhra: The Diabolic Lie
Overview: The Anatomy Of Manufactured Lies
What really happened at Godhra can only be known by sifting fact from fiction. TEHELKA exposes the police’s case in Godhra

THE STORY AT A GLANCE
For five years, Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP government in Gujarat have evoked the Sabarmati Express tragedy at Godhra as a justification for the cataclysmic pogrom of Muslims that followed. They claim the arson was not just the horrible result of mob fury spinning out of control, but a premeditated communal conspiracy. TEHELKA’s painstaking six-month long investigation exposed a disturbing trail of lies and subversion through force and bribery. This, in brief, is the story of its findings.

THE POLICE VERSION
The broadstrokes of the police’s claims are as follows:

Several religious and political Muslim leaders of Godhra — Maulvi Umarji; two Muslim corporators, Bilal Haji and Farooq Bhana; a guesthouse owner, Rajjak Kurkur; and a hawker, Salim Paanwala conspired to burn coach S-6 (not just any coach but, for some unexplained reason, coach S-6 in particular) of the Sabarmati Express on February 27, 2002.

Mohammad Hussain Kalota Shaikh, then president of the Godhra Municipal Council, and two Muslim corporators, Salim Shaikh and Abdur Rahman Dhantiya were among the mob, inciting people to burn the train. However, the police do not claim to know if these men were also involved in the conspiracy.

The police claim coach S-6 was set on fire after a large quantity of petrol was poured on its floor. They say 140 litres of this petrol was bought on February 26, 2002 from Kalabhai’s petrol pump, owned by a Muslim. The petrol was carried the next morning by nine Muslim hawkers, and inexplicably, one reluctant Hindu hawker, to Cabin A, where the Sabarmati Express had stalled.

The Sabarmati Express halted at Cabin A, not because of chainpulling by karsevaks but by three Muslim hawkers who scaled three different coaches of the moving train and turned the discs. (It is important the police prove this or their conspiracy theory falls flat. After all, had the train not halted outside Cabin A, how could the hawkers have set fire to S-6?)

The police claim that some hawkers cut the 6-inch thick vestibule connecting coaches S-6 and S-7 with ordinary scissors and entered S-6. They then poured petrol on the floor of the coach. Some petrol was also thrown inside through a broken window.

POLICE EVIDENCE TO BACK THEIR THEORY

The police’s case rests chiefly on statements by nine BJP party members who claim to be eyewitnesses. Between them they have identified and accused 41 Godhra Muslims. (Dileep Dasadiya, one the nine BJP men, has since completely retracted his statement.)

The case also rests on statements by karsevaks travelling in S-6 and other coaches. Their claim: the mob was throwing petrol and kerosene, acid bulbs, petrol bulbs and mashaals through broken windows and sprinkling inflammable liquid on the coach.

Three karsevaks first clai med they’d fainted due to the smoke and not seen anything. Two months later, they changed their stand and said they’d seen some liquid being poured on the floor of the coach. These new statements were recorded on May 7, 2002 — 15 days before the first charge sheet — and became the main thrust of the police case.

Though it discounted that S-6 was set on fire by inflammable liquid thrown through the window or sprinkled on the exterior of the coach, the forensic report claimed “60 litres of petrol may have been thrown along the floor of the coach from the southern direction...” This became the accepted theory.

A month and a half after the first chargesheet, the police produced a “know-all witness” — Ajay Baria, a Hindu tea vendor, who inexplicably claimed he’d been forcibly taken along by nine Muslim hawkers to load petrol and set S-6 on fire. Baria, the cornerstone of their case, now lives under close police vigil.

Two weeks after arresting them, the police produced two Muslim hawkers — Illias Hussain and Anwar Kalandar — who said they had scaled the train and turned the discs to stop it. Both have since retracted through affidavits in the Supreme Court.

A Muslim hawker, Jabir Binyamin Bahera, confessed he was part of the group of hawkers that had cut the vestibule and poured the petrol along the floor of the coach. He said two Muslim corporators — Bilal Haji and Farooq Bhana — had told him coach S-6 had to be burnt as Maulvi Umarji had instructed. Bahera has since retracted his statement through an affidavit in court.

A year after the incident, the police produced two Hindu salesmen — Prabhatsingh Patel and Ranjitsingh Patel — employed by Kalabhai petrol pump, who claimed they’d sold 140 litres of petrol to the accused on the evening of February 26, 2002. Significantly, the two had first said they’d not sold any loose petrol to anybody on that day or the evening before. They now have 24 hour police protection.

Sikandar Siddik is another police witness. He clai med he saw Muslim hawkers setting S-6 on fire and that Maulvi Umarji told him he was paying Rs 1,500 to the accused. He also said he’d seen corporators — Bilal Haji and Farooq Bhana — near the coach. Additionally, he said he saw Maulvi Yakub Punjabi inciting the mob. (The police detained Punjabi, but had to let him go be c a use Punjabi was not in India but in Saudi Arabia at the time of the incident.)

The police also used confessions from six other Muslim hawkers who, according to the police, admitted to their role in the burning of coach S-6 at the behest of Maulvi Umarji and the Muslim corporators. All six have since retracted their confessions.

The truth of what really happened in Godhra can only be known by discarding what did not happen. TEHELKA’s investigation uncovered some heinous fictions.

FICTION The two salesmen — Ranjitsingh Patel and Prabhatsingh Patel — who claimed they sold 140 litres of petrol to Muslim hawkers in their statements were actually bribed by the chief investigating officer, Noel Parmar, to say this and falsely identify people. TEHELKA caught Ranjitsingh on camera admitting to this. The amount paid to each was Rs 50,000.

FICTION The nine BJP members who identified 41 Muslims were actually not even present at the station that day. The TEHELKA undercover reporter caught two of them — Kakul Pathak and Murli Mulchandani — on camera, categorically admitting that they were not there that day, and that the police had filed statements in their name without their knowledge and they had colluded to serve Hindutva.

FICTION Illias Hussain and Anwar Kalandar who were arrested by the police and made to claim that they had turned the discs that stopped the train at Cabin A were actually tortured by Noel Parmar and his team into doing so. Illias told the TEHELKA reporter that while they were in custody, Parmar’s men would put a log on his leg and walk on it. Kalandar said they had put electric current on his genitals. A year after their statements to the police, the two had returned from enforced exile and retracted their statements through an affidavit in court.

FICTION Ajay Baria, the inexplicable Hindu vendor whose statement seemed to stitch the police’s theory neatly into place, is no longer allowed to live in Godhra. He is tailed by two policemen round the clock. TEHELKA could not speak to him directly but spoke to his mother. The mother said Baria had become a police witness out of fear.

FICTION Maulvi Umarji, whose alleged role in the conspiracy, is crucial to uphold the police’s theory was not present at the site during the incident. The allegations against him rest on two statements. Significantly, Jabir Bin Bahera, who first named him, later retracted his statement. Sikandar Siddik, the other witness who named Umarji, proved himself unreliable — he had named Maulvi Yakub Punjabi as well as Umarji. It turned out Punjabi wasn’t even in India on the day of the incident.

FICTION The forensic report had effectively demolished the police and State’s contention that S-6 was burnt by inflammable liquid either thrown in through broken windows or sprinkled outside the coach. The new and current theory that S-6 was burnt because of petrol thrown along its floor is based on the statements of three karsevaks who, just three months earlier, had said they had fainted due to the smoke and thus seen nothing

CORRUPTION IN BJP AND MODI ,GUJARAT,INDIA

If Modi is clean and hates corruption, why has not he appointed a Lokayukta till today? Why is he objecting to the appointment of a lokayukta by the governor and why should the BJP make the usual pilgrimages to the rashtrapathi bhavan demanding the recall of the governor? They acted in a similar way demanding the exit of Karnataka governor. Instead, a CM had the ignominy of going to jail and the state had three CMs so far.
Hundreds of complaints against corruption are lying unheard in Gujarat. From the Sujalam Sufalam scam of 1700 crores to the NREGS boribund scam of 109 crores, the fisheries scam of 600 crores, every department is involved in scams worth thousands of crores. The poor and rural people are being sold to Modi's friends, the industrialists. The state is in terrible debt because of his largess to industry while 21 lakh farmers wait for compensation for the land seized from them. This the record of the yet another prime-minister-in-waiting in addition to the blood of 2000 people.
